Some of you out there may or may not know Dennis Simms, to us he was a great friend and colleague in the industry we all love. He unfortunately passed away over the weekend on Saturday. Dennis was found last week unconscious and had been transported to the ICU at a hospital in Virginia. Once he was admitted we got word from a close friend of Dennis and he told us that he probably won't survive this time. For those that knew Dennis personally, he was known as the guy with 9 lives. He escaped death so many times before and this most recent episode he wasn't so lucky. While Dennis was in the hospital a small handful of his closest friends which included myself made calls to the hospital to check his status and to call and text directly on his phone. Some of us were lucky to reach him directly and my text got through to him and what he said really worried me. Dennis texted back saying "Things are not good. I'm literally fighting for my life right now" This would be the last time I would hear from him. The next day he was on life support and all communications stopped. The end of the week he was gone. We are really sad he's gone and miss him very much.
Dennis was a very important part of our underground dance music scene and he contributed so much to the local Orange County dance music scene. His reach and influence with the radio show "Riders Of The Plastic Groove" which broadcasted through KUCI 88.9 FM (UCI - Irvine). This show is the second longest running radio show at this station. This radio show started in 1992 with the first live aired episode featuring myself "Ron D Core". There had been a small handful of radio hosts that ran this show and Dennis was the longest running and current host and DJ of "Riders". This show featured so many legendary DJ's locally and abroad worldwide. I was fortunate to play on his show countless times at the station on campus and also several live remote broadcasts from Dr. Freecloud's as well. We were lucky to have Dennis spin live at our shop for some of these broadcasts. Hopefully we can locate and release some of his DJ mixes to share with everyone. In the Orange County nightclub scene Dennis played a big part of running sound and lights and deejaying at Shark Club (Costa Mesa) and Metropolis (Irvine). These 2 local nightclubs were legendary in our scene.
Much love to the big guy who meant so much to us, you will truly be missed.
Dennis is now spinning somewhere in the cosmos!
with sympathy...Ron D Core, Helen and the Dr. Freecloud's family
